Yilin Verse

喜樂抃躍,來迎名家。鵲巢百兩,獲利養福。

Joyful, exuberant, clapping and leaping; coming to welcome the renowned family. Magpies nest as a hundred carts arrive; gaining profit, nurturing blessings.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Water over lake sets decorum, and here decorum blossoms into celebration. Clapping and leaping for joy, guests arrive to welcome a distinguished family. Magpies nest and a hundred wedding carriages roll — the double image of domestic happiness and prosperous alliance. The 'hundred liang' echoes the Shijing wedding ode where a bride departs with a grand retinue of carriages. Profit is gained and blessings nourished. From Limitation to Grace, the transformation adorns the structure with beauty. Fire glows beneath the mountain, illuminating without consuming — elegance that enhances rather than overwhelms. Limitation's measured framework becomes Grace's ornamental refinement, proving that true beauty emerges not from excess but from form perfectly observed.
