Trigram Changes
Yilin Verse
三狸搏鼠,遮遏前後。當此之時,不能脫走。
Three cats hunting a mouse, blocking front and rear. At this moment, there is no chance to escape or flee.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water over lake confines, and this verse tightens the confinement to a lethal degree. Three wildcats hunt a single mouse, blocking its path from front and rear. At this moment, escape is impossible. The imagery is of coordinated pursuit leaving no gap — a tactical net drawn tight around a prey that has no options left. From Limitation to Influence, the transformation reveals the hidden mechanism: the lake rests upon the mountain, receptive and sensitive to every tremor. Influence operates through attraction and responsiveness, but here that sensitivity has been weaponized. The mouse is not merely trapped; it is felt, sensed, anticipated at every turn. Limitation's boundaries become Influence's net of awareness — the predators do not merely block but perceive, transforming sensitivity into a cage.
