Yilin Verse

大步上車,南到喜家。送我狐裘,與福載來。

With great strides I mount the cart; traveling south to the house of joy. They present me a fox-fur coat; blessing and fortune arrive together.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind stirs above the lake, and one strides confidently onto the carriage, heading south to a house of joy. A fox-fur robe is presented as a gift, and blessings ride along for the journey. The scene is a wedding or auspicious visit: the southward direction, the generous gift of fine fur, the atmosphere of celebration all point to a felicitous union. From Inner Truth to Peace, the lake's sincerity transforms into the harmonious interchange where heaven descends and earth rises to meet it. The great stride onto the carriage embodies the confidence of one whose inner truth is matched by outward circumstance — blessing arrives not by luck but by the natural convergence of trust given and trust reciprocated.
