Yilin Verse
同本異業,樂仁政德;東鄰慕義,來興我國。
Same root, different callings, delighting in benevolence and virtuous rule. The eastern neighbor admires righteousness and comes to prosper our state.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Earth above heaven, Peace radiates moral magnetism. Those of the same root pursue different vocations, yet all delight in benevolent governance and virtue. The eastern neighbor, moved by this righteousness, comes to revitalize one's own state. The verse envisions a polity so well-governed that its virtue attracts voluntary allegiance from neighboring peoples — not through conquest but through the sheer appeal of good order. From Peace to Inner Truth, wind blows above the lake, and the gentleman deliberates cases of punishment with compassion. The transformation shows how outer harmony (Peace) deepens into inner sincerity (Inner Truth): when virtue is genuine, even distant peoples sense it and are drawn to participate.
