Yilin Verse
卒都和合,未敢面見。媒妁无良,使我不香。
The soldiers harmonize together; yet dare not meet face to face. The matchmaker lacks virtue; leaving me without honor.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind stirs above the lake, but communication is thwarted. The parties are brought together in principle, yet dare not meet face to face. The matchmaker is incompetent, leaving one's reputation tainted. The verse describes a failed arrangement — perhaps a botched marriage negotiation where the go-between mangles the introduction, and what should have been harmonious union turns to mutual avoidance. From Inner Truth to Standstill, sincerity meets the image of heaven and earth refusing to interact. The blockage is not in the parties themselves but in the intermediary: when the channel of trust is corrupted, even willing hearts cannot connect. Standstill here is not cosmic opposition but social paralysis born of a single weak link.
