Trigram Changes
Yilin Verse
符左契右,梁叔有若。相與合齒,乾坤利貞。乳生六子,長大成就,拋吾如母。
Left tally meets right tally; Liang and Shu find each other. Together their teeth align; qian and kun are steadfast. Nursing six children to maturity; they cast me aside like a mother.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind stirs above the lake, and paired halves seek their match. Left tally meets right tally; Liang Shu has his counterpart. Teeth interlock in perfect alignment; Qian and Kun find their auspicious union. The mother gives birth to six children, who grow to great accomplishment and cherish her as their own. The tallied halves (符左契右) evoke the system of split bamboo credentials used to verify identity and authority. The six children born of this union recall the Shuogua Zhuan's cosmology: Qian and Kun as father and mother generating the six trigram-children. From Inner Truth to the Receptive, sincerity at the center yields to earth's boundless capacity to receive and nurture all that heaven generates.
