Yilin Verse

開門內福,喜至我側。嘉門善祥,為吾室宅。宮城洛邑,以招文德。

Opening the gate to welcome blessing; joy arrives at my side. Auspicious gate, good omen; becoming my house and home. Palace city of Luoyang; attracting civil virtue.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind stirs above the lake, and the gates are opened to welcome blessing. Joy arrives at one's side; an auspicious threshold brings good fortune to one's household. The walled city of Luoyi is built to attract the culture of King Wen. The verse culminates in the founding of the eastern capital: the Duke of Zhou established Luoyi (modern Luoyang) as a secondary capital to consolidate Zhou governance over the eastern territories, naming it Chengzhou — 'Completion of Zhou.' The phrase 'to attract civil virtue' (招文德) echoes the Shujing's vision of governance through moral magnetism. From Inner Truth to Innocence, sincerity yields to thunder moving beneath heaven — action aligned with heaven's will, free of ulterior motive.
