Yilin Verse
威約拘囚,為人所誣。皋陶平理,幾得脫免。
Bound by threat and chains; falsely accused by others. Gao Yao adjudicates fairly; nearly obtaining release.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind stirs above the lake, but the innocent is bound in chains. Coerced and imprisoned, falsely accused by others. Then Gao Yao adjudicates the case with impartial clarity, and the prisoner narrowly escapes. Gao Yao, the legendary minister of justice under Shun and Yu, represents the ideal of law administered without bias. From Inner Truth to Holding Together, the lake's sincerity yields to water flowing across the earth, gathering all into union. The verse traces a complete arc: injustice, then deliverance through righteous judgment. When a true arbiter arrives, the bonds of false accusation dissolve, and the community reconstitutes around trust restored.
