Yilin Verse

濟流難渡,濡我衣袴。五子善櫂,脫无他故。

The swift current is hard to cross; it soaks my clothes and trousers. Five sons skilled with oars escape without mishap.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Water sits above fire, and the river crossing proves difficult — clothes and trousers are soaked through. But five skilled oarsmen handle the boat, and the crossing is completed without mishap. The verse acknowledges that the passage is rough but provides the means to survive it: expert hands on the oars transform a dangerous ford into a safe one. From After Completion to Coming to Meet, fire-and-water balance yields to heaven with wind beneath — the unexpected encounter that arrives from below. The five oarsmen are the unforeseen resource that makes the crossing possible. Coming to Meet brings what was not planned for; the completed order encounters a new element and, if handled well, integrates it without capsizing.
