Yilin Verse
天命赤烏,與兵徼期。征伐无道,箕子遊遨。
Heaven commands the red crow to set the time for war. Marching against the unrighteous way; Jizi wanders free.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water sits above fire, and heaven's mandate sends forth the red crow — the auspicious omen that signals the time for military action. The campaign targets a ruler who has lost the Way, and the Viscount of Ji wanders freely at last. The red crow (赤烏) was the omen that confirmed King Wu of Zhou's mandate to overthrow the tyrant Zhou of Shang at the Battle of Muye in 1046 BC. The Viscount of Ji, one of the Three Benevolent Ones of Shang who had feigned madness to survive the tyrant's court, was liberated after the conquest. From After Completion to Abundance, fire-and-water order transforms into thunder and lightning striking together — overwhelming brilliance and power converging at the decisive moment.
