Yilin Verse

鳥飛兔走,各有畏惡。雕鷹為賊,亂我室舍。

Birds fly, rabbits run; each has what it fears and loathes. The vulture and hawk turn brigand; they throw my household into chaos.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire above water, and predators roam unchecked. Birds fly and rabbits dash, each with its own natural enemy. But the eagle-hawk turns marauder, throwing the household into chaos. The verse presents a world where the natural order of predation has been violated — the hawk, which should hunt in the wild, has invaded domestic space. From Before Completion to Fellowship, the fire-over-water transforms into heaven joined with fire, the image of kindred spirits uniting. The verse reads as a warning about what Fellowship must overcome: when fellowship fails, even creatures that should coexist become threats to one another. True community requires distinguishing friend from foe — the gentleman 'classifies by kind and distinguishes things,' as the image text instructs.
