Yilin Verse

曳綸河海,掛釣魴鯉。王孫利德,以享仲友。

Trailing the line across river and sea; setting the hook for bream and carp. The young lord's virtuous catch; shared in feast with honored friends.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire above water, the unfinished state. A line is cast into river and sea, hooking bream and carp. A nobleman profits through virtue and shares the feast with trusted companions. The fishing imagery is both literal and political — 'trailing a line in the great waters' echoes the recruitment of talent, while the feast for 'middle friends' (仲友) suggests bonds sealed through shared abundance. From Before Completion to Enthusiasm, fire-over-water transforms into thunder rising from the earth. The patient fisherman who waits by the water gives way to the thunderous energy of collective joy — Enthusiasm's image of the ancient kings making music to honor heaven. The catch has been made; now the celebration begins, and the community is roused to shared purpose.
