Yilin Verse
機關不便,不能出言。精成通道,為人所冤。
The mechanism jams; unable to speak a word. Though the spirit perfects the way; by others one is wrongly condemned.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Fire above water, and the mechanism jams. The device is stuck and cannot speak; the spirit achieves its breakthrough along the path, yet is wronged by others. The verse evokes a figure who, despite possessing inner clarity and spiritual attainment, is unable to articulate or defend themselves — mechanically silenced, then falsely accused. From Before Completion to Influence, fire-over-water transforms into the lake resting upon the mountain, the image of mutual responsiveness. Influence works through the empty center — the gentleman receives others by keeping himself hollow and open. The tragic irony here is that the spiritual adept has achieved this emptiness (精成通道) but is met not with sympathetic resonance but with slander. The mechanism of connection has failed at the human level.
