Yilin Verse
坐茵乘軒,據德宰臣。虞叔受命,六合和親。
Seated on cushions, riding in the carriage; established in virtue as chief minister. Yu Shu receives the mandate; the six realms join in harmony.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Fire above water, the unfinished order seeking resolution. A minister sits upon embroidered mats and rides in a canopied carriage, wielding virtue as his instrument of governance. Yu Shu receives the mandate; the six directions are united in harmony. 'Yu Shu' (虞叔) may refer to a virtuous minister of the legendary age, possibly connected to the Shun-era bureaucracy. The six directions (六合) encompass the entire cosmos — north, south, east, west, above, and below. From Before Completion to Gathering, fire-over-water transforms into the lake resting upon the earth. Gathering is the hexagram of convergence: the people assemble, the community consolidates, and the ruler prepares for the unexpected. The verse shows Gathering achieved through moral authority rather than force.
