Yilin Verse

春桃生花,季女宜家。受福且多,在師中吉,男為封君。

Spring peach blossoms open; the young daughter makes a good home. She receives many blessings; in the army, auspicious -- the son becomes an enfeoffed lord.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Water hidden within the earth nurtures life unseen, and spring peach trees burst into bloom. The youngest daughter makes a fine match — a line echoing the Shijing's celebration of proper marriage. She receives abundant blessings; in the army's midst there is good fortune, and a son shall become an enfeoffed lord. The verse paints a scene of fecundity married to institutional order: the military campaign succeeds because it is rightly led, and domestic prosperity follows. From The Army to The Receptive, the disciplined force dissolves into earth's boundless capacity to receive and sustain. What was mobilized for war now settles into the nurturing ground of family and harvest.
