Yilin Verse
李花再實,鴻飛降集。仁哲權輿,蔭國受福。
The plum tree fruits twice; wild geese descend and gather. The humane and wise begin their rise; shading the state, receiving blessings.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water upon earth draws all things to convergence, and the verse celebrates renewal upon renewal. The plum tree fruits a second time — an extraordinary omen of doubled abundance. Wild geese descend and gather, signaling seasonal return and reunion. A figure of wisdom and benevolence inaugurates a new era, sheltering the state and receiving blessings. The twice-fruiting plum suggests that what was thought spent still holds generative power. From Holding Together to Conflict, the image shifts from convergence to the tension of heaven and water moving in opposite directions. Yet the verse's optimism implies that even within adversarial structures, the seeds of renewal persist — a wise leader planted in the right moment can transform discord into shelter.
