Yilin Verse
五舌啄難,各自有言;異國殊俗,使心迷惑,所求不得。
Five tongues peck at trouble, each with its own words. Foreign lands and different customs confuse the heart; what is sought cannot be obtained.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind above heaven meets heaven standing over the lake — propriety and distinction. Five tongues peck contentiously, each with its own argument. Foreign lands and alien customs bewilder the heart, and what one seeks remains out of reach. From Small Taming to Treading, the gentle wind that should refine gives way to the careful step that must navigate danger. Treading's image is walking on the tiger's tail without being bitten — a matter of knowing precisely where to place one's foot. The five quarreling tongues represent the confusion of voices in unfamiliar territory. When customs conflict and languages clash, discernment falters and the goal recedes.
