Yilin Verse

眾神集聚,相與議語;南國虛亂,百姓勞苦;興師征伐,更立賢主。

The assembled spirits gather together, conferring and deliberating. The southern land is empty and in turmoil; the common people suffer toil. They raise an army to campaign; and set up a worthy lord.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind above heaven gives way to thunder bursting from the earth. The assembled spirits gather and deliberate among themselves: the southern state has fallen into chaos, the people groan under suffering. An army is raised to campaign, and a worthy ruler is installed. From Small Taming to Enthusiasm, gentle accumulation transforms into decisive, thunderous action. Yu's image — thunder erupting from the earth — is the energy of ritual music and martial resolve that stirs the world. The spirits' council mirrors the sage-kings who made music to honor heaven before marching to war. When cultural refinement has done its work, the moment demands initiative: armies move, order is restored, and the mandate passes to the virtuous.
