Yilin Verse

駕福乘喜,來至家國;戴慶南行,離我安居。

Riding fortune, mounting joy; arriving at the homeland. Bearing blessings, heading south; departing from my peaceful dwelling.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind above heaven transforms into fire glowing beneath the mountain — the quiet radiance of Grace. Fortune is harnessed and joy is mounted like a carriage, arriving at the homeland. Carrying blessings southward, one departs from this place of peaceful dwelling. From Small Taming to Grace, heaven's energy descends into the mountain where fire illuminates from below — an image of inner light that adorns without overwhelming. The verse captures arrival and departure as equally blessed: joy comes in, blessings go out. Bi's counsel is to attend to appearances and outward form while refraining from harsh judgments. The movement of fortune here is graceful, not grasping — blessings circulate rather than accumulate.
