Yilin Verse
芽孽生達,陽昌於外;左手執籥,公言錫爵。
Shoots and sprouts emerge and thrive; yang flourishes in the outer realm. The left hand grasps the flute; the duke proclaims the granting of rank.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind above heaven meets fire above the lake — Opposition's estranged pairing. Shoots and sprouts break through, thriving; yang flourishes outwardly. The left hand holds a flute, and the lord announces the bestowal of rank. From Small Taming to Opposition, the verse finds unexpected harmony within estrangement. Kui's fire and lake move in contrary directions, yet the gentleman uses this tension to 'agree in principle while differing in practice.' The sprouting yang and the ceremonial flute suggest creative energy finding formal expression. The lord's reward comes precisely because opposition has been navigated rather than suppressed. Growth under tension, recognition amid difference — Kui's gift is that fruitful things emerge from the space between incompatibles.
