Yilin Verse

學靈三年,聖且神明;光見善祥,吉喜福慶;鳴鳩飛來,告我無憂。

Studying the numinous for three years, becoming sagely and divinely clear. Light reveals auspicious signs; fortune, joy, and blessed celebration. The calling dove flies to me; announcing that I need not worry.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind above heaven meets wind atop the mountain — Development's gradual, organic growth. Three years of studying the numinous arts yield sagely insight and spiritual clarity. Auspicious light reveals good omens; joy, blessings, and celebration abound. A turtledove flies in bearing a message: be free of worry. From Small Taming to Development, gentle refinement extends into the slow, rooted advancement of Jian's tree growing upon the mountain. Three years of study echoes the classical period of mourning and mastery — the time required for genuine transformation. The turtledove, a bird of constancy in the Shijing, confirms the ripened result. Development is never hurried; the omens appear only after the full apprenticeship is served.
