天地不交之否，然珪璧琮璋——四種禮玉——執贄以見王。百里奚與甯戚（一作甯越）自卑微而顯達：百里奚以五羖贖身為秦穆公之相；甯戚飯牛而歌，齊桓公識其才而用之。二者皆於否塞之世以才德為贄，入見明君。從否至訟（天與水違行），閉塞化為相違之勢，然訟戒「作事謀始」——謀定而後動方能化違為合。此二人正以精準之時機呈上才華之信物，將卑微之出身轉化為卿相之任命，否中求通之典範。
