Yilin Verse
目瞤足動,喜如其願,舉家蒙寵。
The eye twitches, the foot stirs; joy comes as wished. The whole household receives favor.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
The eye twitches and the foot stirs — in Han-dynasty folk omen lore, involuntary bodily signs that herald good news. Joy arrives as wished; the entire household receives favor. From Creative to Waiting, heaven's impetus encounters clouds gathering above — Water over Heaven, the image of patience before nourishment arrives. The verse captures the moment just before fulfillment: the body already senses what the mind has not yet confirmed. Need's counsel is to wait with confidence, enjoying food and drink, trusting that what is due will come. The twitching eye and stirring foot are the body's intuition that heaven's timing is about to deliver.
