Yilin Verse
据斗運,樞順天無憂。與樂並居。
Grasping the Dipper and turning the pivot; following heaven without worry. Dwelling together with joy.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Grasping the Dipper's handle, the celestial pivot turns in accord with heaven's order — no worry, only shared joy. The Big Dipper's rotation through the seasons was the Han-dynasty astronomer's clock: its handle pointing east meant spring, south meant summer. From Creative to Small Taming, wind courses above heaven, gently restraining its force. The verse captures this as cosmic harmony: one who aligns with heaven's rotation rather than fighting it finds peace. Small Taming's wind cannot stop heaven but can refine it — like the pivot of the Dipper channeling limitless celestial motion into readable, seasonal order.
