Yilin Verse
三姦相擾,桀跖為交;上下騷離,隔絕天道。
Three villains agitate one another; Jie and Zhi form their alliance. Above and below, turmoil and separation; cutting off the way of heaven.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven above the lake, but proper conduct has been abandoned. Three treacherous men conspire together, forming alliances as vile as those of tyrant Jie and Robber Zhi. The social order fractures — high and low are torn apart, severed from the Way of Heaven. Jie represents political tyranny at the summit; Zhi represents banditry at the base. Their union signifies the complete corruption of hierarchy when both rulers and outlaws share the same ethics. From Treading to Following, thunder rests within the lake — a force temporarily dormant. The verse warns that when one follows such men, the natural order collapses and heaven's mandate is lost.
