Yilin Verse
目傾心惑,夏姬在側;申公顛倒,巫臣亂國。
Eyes dazzled, heart beguiled, Lady Xia Ji at his side; Lord Shengong tumbles in ruin, Wu Chen throws the state into chaos.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder rests within the lake, but the eye tilts and the heart is bewitched. Xia Ji stands beside the ruler — the legendary beauty of the state of Chen whose allure brought ruin to every man who pursued her. Shen Gong, the minister who schemed to possess her, is 'overturned'; Wu Chen, who eventually eloped with her to Jin, threw a state into chaos for her sake. According to the Zuo Zhuan, Xia Ji was blamed for the deaths of three husbands, one lord, and one son. From Following to Treading, the verse warns that blind following of desire inverts Lü's careful discernment of high and low — when passion leads, one treads on the tiger's tail without even noticing.
