Yilin Verse

涉伯徇名,棄禮誅身;不得其道,成子奔燕。

She Bo pursues fame, abandoning rites, and brings destruction upon himself. Unable to find the proper way; Cheng Zi flees to Yan.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Heaven above the lake, a cautionary tale of misplaced ambition. Lord She pursues reputation at the cost of propriety, abandoning ritual and bringing death upon himself. Unable to find the proper Way, Lord Chengzi flees to Yan. The verse likely alludes to a Spring and Autumn figure who sacrificed principle for fame and paid with his life, while another chose exile over complicity. From Treading to Nourishment, the mountain rests above thunder. True nourishment demands careful speech and measured appetite — the opposite of reckless pursuit of fame. One who discards ritual to chase glory starves the spirit while feeding the ego.
