Yilin Verse
重伯黃寶,宜以我市;嫁娶有恩,利得過母。
Chong Bo is yellow treasure; fit for trade at my market. Marriage brings lasting kindness; the profit gained surpasses the mother is portion.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven above the lake, and precious goods facilitate exchange. Valuable yellow treasures are weighed and deemed fit for trade. Marriage brings mutual benefit, and the profit surpasses what the mother's family expected. The verse presents a commercial-matrimonial transaction: wealth is exchanged, a bride is given, and both sides gain. The tone is practical rather than romantic — alliance through measured reciprocity. From Treading to Coming to Meet, wind stirs beneath heaven as the ruler issues commands to all quarters. The encounter is arranged, not accidental. Proper conduct in negotiation produces a meeting that benefits both parties — the sovereign's decree reaches far, and each side recognizes the other's value.
