Yilin Verse
鼓瑟歌舞,懽遺於酒。龍喜張口,大喜在後。
Plucking the zither, singing and dancing; joy poured forth in wine. The dragon delights and opens its mouth; great happiness lies ahead.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind beneath heaven announces a celebration. Drums and zithers sound, songs and dances swirl, and joy overflows into wine. A dragon opens its mouth in delight — an omen of coming grandeur. The verse is pure festivity, each image layered upon the last: music, dance, wine, the dragon's gaping smile, and the promise that the greatest happiness lies still ahead. From Coming to Meet to Treading, heaven stands above the lake, establishing proper hierarchy through joyful compliance. The encounter of Gou here delivers its brightest promise: one steps carefully upon the tiger's tail and the tiger does not bite, for this is a moment when heaven and earth align in shared celebration.
