Yilin Verse
大頭目明,載受嘉福;三雀飛來,與祿相得。
Great of head and bright of eye, blessed and laden with fine fortune. Three sparrows fly to me; meeting with prosperity and gain.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven above the lake, and a broad-headed, bright-eyed figure receives abundant blessings. Three sparrows fly in bearing good fortune — fortune alighting as naturally as birds coming to roost. The verse is entirely auspicious: the recipient's physical presence commands respect (large head and clear eyes suggest authority and perception), and heaven sends its messengers in triplicate. From Treading to Inner Truth, wind moves above the lake. The open center of Inner Truth — the hollow heart of sincerity — becomes a vessel for the blessings that proper conduct attracts. When treading is sincere, fortune does not need to be pursued; it arrives on its own wings.
