Yilin Verse

四目相視,稍近同軌。日昳之後,見吾伯姊。

Four eyes meet and gaze; gradually drawing near on the same path. After the sun declines; I see my elder sister.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind stirs above the lake, and four eyes meet in mutual recognition. Gradually drawing closer, they converge upon the same path. After the sun passes its zenith, one meets one's elder sister. The verse evokes a reunion governed by timing and propriety: the gaze precedes the approach, the approach precedes the meeting, and the meeting happens only when the day has turned. From Inner Truth to Treading, sincerity yields to heaven above the lake — the image of walking with careful distinction between high and low. The four watching eyes suggest an encounter conducted with full awareness, each step deliberate. Trust is not blind here; it is precise, measured, and arrives at its destination exactly on schedule.
