Yilin Verse
羔衣豹裘,高易我家;君子維好。
In lambskin robe and leopard fur, he ennobles our household. The gentleman maintains fine friendship.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Earth above heaven, Peace's generosity materialized in fine garments. Lambskin coats and leopard-fur cuffs — the attire of a nobleman or a worthy minister, echoing the Shijing ode 'Gao Qiu' where the lamb's fur symbolizes a gentleman's integrity. These fine things elevate one's household, and the gentleman maintains bonds of friendship. The verse is brief and auspicious: material prosperity affirming social harmony. From Peace to Gathering, the lake rises upon the earth, and the gentleman prepares arms to guard against the unexpected. The transformation shows Peace's blessings concentrating: scattered goodwill converges into a gathering of the worthy, where fine garments signal not vanity but earned distinction.
