Yilin Verse

春桃生花,季女宜家;受福多年,男為邦君。

Spring peach blossoms bloom; the youngest daughter graces her new home. Receiving blessing for many years; her son becomes lord of the realm.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Heaven and earth refuse to communicate, but spring arrives and peach trees burst into blossom. The youngest daughter finds a harmonious home, receives blessings for many years, and her son becomes lord of a state. From Standstill to Following, Pi's sealed world opens into the lake with thunder resting within — the image of evening rest after the day's exertion. Sui's principle is adaptive responsiveness: following the natural rhythm of seasons and circumstance. The verse traces this perfectly — spring peach blossoms lead to marriage, marriage to years of blessing, blessing to a son's eminence. Each step follows naturally from the last, with no forcing. Standstill dissolves not through confrontation but through the organic unfolding of life's own seasons.
