Yilin Verse
杜口結舌,言為禍母;代伯受患,無所禱冤。
Mouth shut, tongue tied; words are the mother of disaster. Bearing another's punishment; there is no one to whom to plead.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven and earth refuse to communicate as one shuts the mouth and ties the tongue — speech itself becomes the mother of disaster. Taking blame on behalf of the elder brother, one has nowhere to present a grievance. From Standstill to The Gentle, Pi's blockage meets doubled wind — Xun's image of penetrating influence, commands issued and carried out. Yet the verse shows penetration's dark side: when words are dangerous, silence becomes survival, but silence under injustice is its own form of suffering. Xun's wind should carry the ruler's commands to all four corners, but here the wind carries only the warning that speech kills. The sealed mouth is both prison and shield, and the one who bears another's punishment has no wind to carry their plea.
