Yilin Verse

娶於姜呂,駕迎新婦;少齊在門,夫子悅喜。

Marrying a lady of the Jiang and Lyu house; the carriage drives to welcome the bride. The young lady of Qi stands at the gate; the husband is pleased and joyful.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Heaven and fire form Fellowship, and the scene is a wedding procession. The bride comes from the Jiang and Lü clans — the ancient lineage of the Taigong, the Zhou dynasty's founding ally. The carriage is driven to welcome the new wife; the young woman of Qi stands at the gate, and the bridegroom is filled with delight. The Jiang clan intermarriage was the cornerstone of Zhou's political alliances, so this wedding carries both personal joy and dynastic resonance. From Fellowship to Dispersion, the transformation scatters what the wedding gathered. Wind over water in Dispersion; the ancient kings made offerings and built temples. The bride who arrives also disperses old boundaries — her entry into a new household dissolves former separations into shared kinship.
