Yilin Verse

年豐歲熟,政仁民樂;利以居止,旅人獲福。

A bountiful year, a rich harvest; governance is benevolent, the people content. Favorable for settling and staying; the traveler gains good fortune.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

A year of plenty, the harvest ripe, governance benevolent and the people joyful. A good place to settle; even travelers receive blessings. The verse paints the simplest and most complete image of prosperity: good crops, good governance, contented residence, and hospitality to strangers. From Great Possession to Biting Through, fire over heaven becomes fire and thunder — the lightning that clears obstruction and enforces law. The connection may seem paradoxical, but Biting Through's purpose is precisely to create the conditions described here: by removing obstacles and enforcing just governance, the sage-king produces the harvest of peace. The verse is the result; the hexagram is the method.
