Yilin Verse
火至井谷,陽芒生角;登上玉床,家易六公。
Fire reaches the well's valley; the sun's brilliance sprouts horns. Ascending the jade bed; the household changes its six lords.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Fire reaches the well-valley and a horn of yang-brilliance sprouts. One ascends the jade bed as the household undergoes a change of six lords. The imagery is alchemical and dynastic: fire penetrating into the earth's depths ignites a new shoot of vital energy, and this rebirth elevates someone to the seat of power. The jade bed suggests enthronement, and the change of 'six lords' may refer to a succession or rotation of authority within the household. From Great Possession to Return, fire over heaven becomes thunder stirring within the earth — the first yang returning after a period of complete yin. The verse captures this precisely: light plunges into the abyss and from that nadir, new life sprouts.
