Yilin Verse
賀喜從福,曰利蕃息,歡樂有得。
Congratulations follow blessings; it is said to be profitable and multiplying. Joy and delight bring gain.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Congratulations and blessings arrive together. Prosperity is declared, with growth and increase on every side, joy and gain in abundance. The verse is brief and entirely auspicious — a burst of good fortune without complication. From Great Possession to Deliverance, fire above heaven transforms into thunder and rain — the sudden release of built-up tension. Deliverance's image is the thunderstorm that breaks the oppressive heat, and the superior man pardons errors and forgives transgressions. The joy described here is specifically the joy of release — knots untied, burdens lifted, the relief that comes after crisis has passed. Great Possession's accumulated wealth finds its outlet in Deliverance's liberating storm, and what follows is pure, uncomplicated happiness.
