Yilin Verse

吾家黍梁,積委道傍;有囊服箱,運到我鄉,藏於嘉倉。

Our household's millet and fine grain, heaped along the roadside. With bags and traveling trunks; we transport them to our village and store them in the granary.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

My household's millet and sorghum lie heaped along the roadside. With sacks and carts they are loaded and transported to my village, stored away in the fine granary. The verse is a harvest triumph: grain so plentiful it overflows the threshing floor onto the road, then is systematically gathered, carted home, and properly stored. The word 服箱 (yoked cart) evokes the Shijing ode 'Da Dong' where the Cowherd star cannot be yoked to a cart — here, unlike that ode's image of futility, the cart is fully laden and productive. From Great Possession to Breakthrough, fire over heaven becomes lake over heaven — water surging upward in decisive action. The grain's journey from roadside heap to secure granary mirrors Breakthrough's dynamic: decisive distribution of accumulated wealth.
