Yilin Verse

鹿食美草,逍遙求飽。日暮後門,過期乃還,肥澤且厭。

The deer feeds on fine grass, wandering at ease to fill its belly. At dusk by the back gate, past the hour it finally returns; sleek, plump, and sated.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Lake risen above heaven opens into fire blazing high in the sky. A deer grazes on fine grass, wandering at leisure to fill its belly. As evening falls it lingers by the back gate, returning past its time, sleek and satiated to the point of surfeit. The deer knows nothing of urgency — it eats until it can eat no more, heedless of the hour. From Breakthrough to Great Possession, decisive cutting-away yields to overflowing abundance. Fire above heaven illuminates everything one owns, and the verse embodies this through effortless plenty. Yet 'past its time' and 'surfeit' carry a faint warning: even within Great Possession, there is a threshold where contentment shades into excess. The deer, fat and slow, may not see the hunter.
