Yilin Verse
雀行求食,出門見鷂;顛蹶上下,幾無所處。
A sparrow ventures out seeking food and meets a sparrowhawk at the gate. Tumbling up and down; it almost has nowhere to go.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
A sparrow ventures out to find food but meets a sparrowhawk at the door. It tumbles up and down in panic, barely finding a place to rest. The scene captures the terror of the small creature confronting its natural predator in the most exposed moment — the instant of stepping outside for sustenance. From Great Possession to Gathering, fire above heaven becomes lake above earth — the image of people congregating, but also of preparing weapons against the unexpected. The sparrow's plight embodies exactly what Gathering warns against: the vulnerability of those who gather without adequate defense. Abundance means nothing if the gatherer is hunted the moment it steps out to claim its share.
