Yilin Verse
左抱金玉,右得熊足;常盈不亡,獲心所欲。
Left arm embraces gold and jade; right hand grasps the bear's paw. Ever full, never wanting; one obtains the heart's desire.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
The left arm cradles gold and jade; the right hand seizes a bear's paw. Wealth remains perpetually full, never diminishing — one obtains the heart's every desire. The verse pairs two forms of abundance: precious metals and gems with the bear's foot, a famous delicacy and symbol of raw, vital power. Together they represent complete fulfillment — both cultivated elegance and primal strength. From Great Possession to Revolution, fire above heaven becomes fire within the lake — the transforming tension of opposing elements. Revolution's mechanism is decisive change at the proper moment. Here, the ability to hold both gold and bear-meat suggests someone who commands both civil and martial resources — precisely the dual mastery needed to execute successful revolution. Abundance funds transformation.
