Yilin Verse
南山之陽,華葉鏘鏘。嘉樂君子,為國寵光。
On the sunny slope of the southern mountain, blossoms and leaves ring splendidly. The admirable and joyful gentleman is the honored glory of the state.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Fire within the lake rises to become fire blazing in heaven — Great Possession, radiant and abundant. On the southern slope of the mountain, leaves flourish with a brilliant sheen. The worthy gentleman brings glory and favor to his state. South-facing slopes receive the fullest sun; vegetation there grows lushest. The 'worthy gentleman' honored by his nation evokes the Shijing's celebrations of virtuous ministers whose very presence blesses the realm. From Revolution to Great Possession, the transformation is luminous: the fire that once consumed the old order now illuminates from the highest heaven, and the one who endures revolution with virtue becomes the nation's radiance.
