Yilin Verse
鳧雁啞啞,以水為宅;雌雄相和,心志娛樂。得其所欲。
Wild geese calling; the water is their home. Male and female in harmony; heart and spirit find delight. They obtain what they desire.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Ducks and wild geese cry out in their chattering calls, making the water their home. Male and female pair in harmony, their hearts content and spirits delighted — they obtain all they desire. The verse is a simple, joyous image of natural pairing: waterfowl at ease in their element, perfectly matched. The sounds are not mournful but lively, the bustle of contented creatures. From Great Possession to the Marrying Maiden, fire above heaven becomes thunder over lake — the eldest son leading the youngest daughter. The Marrying Maiden hexagram concerns union, specifically the younger woman entering a household, and the verse presents the ideal: willing, natural partnership where both parties find what they seek. The waterfowl's habitat is their marriage-home.
