Yilin Verse
配合相迎,利之四鄰;昏以為期,與福笑喜。
Well-matched, they welcome each other; profit extends to the four neighbors. Dusk is set as the appointed hour; with blessings they share laughter and joy.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Mates are matched and welcomed, bringing benefit to all four neighbors. The wedding date is set at dusk, and blessings arrive amid laughter and joy. The verse celebrates marriage as a communal event: the union does not merely benefit the couple but radiates outward to enrich the entire neighborhood. The evening wedding follows ancient Chinese custom, where the bride arrived at dusk. From Great Possession to The Joyous, fire above heaven becomes doubled lake — friends gathering for shared learning and mutual delight. The Joyous is the hexagram of open, reciprocal pleasure, and the wedding feast is its natural expression. Abundance finds its most human fulfillment not in private accumulation but in the shared joy of proper union.
