Yilin Verse
大頭明目,載受嘉福;三雀飛來,與祿相單。
A great head, bright eyes; one receives fine blessings. Three sparrows fly to us; paired with bounty they alight.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
A large head with bright eyes receives excellent blessings. Three sparrows fly in, bringing fortune to match. The image is auspicious and vivid: the prominent-featured figure may represent a deity or auspicious being whose features signify perceptiveness and spiritual potency. The three arriving sparrows function as messengers of fortune, their number suggesting completeness. From Great Possession to After Completion, fire above heaven becomes water above fire — everything in its proper place. After Completion represents the moment when all elements align perfectly, and the verse celebrates exactly this: blessings arriving as if summoned, fortune and recipient meeting in harmonious conjunction. Yet After Completion also warns of complacency — this perfect moment is to be savored, not assumed to last.
