Yilin Verse
蒙慶受福,有所獲得,不利出門。
Receiving blessings amid good fortune, there is something to be gained; it is not favorable to go out the door.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water sits above fire, blessings and good fortune arrive — there are gains to be had. Yet the verse cautions: do not go out the door. One receives favor and profit while staying within, but venturing abroad invites danger. The message is one of quiet consolidation: fortune comes to those who tend what they already possess rather than seeking more. From After Completion to Great Possession, fire-and-water balance yields to fire blazing above heaven — abundance at its most expansive. Yet the verse tempers this: Great Possession achieved from a completed state works best through restraint, not expansion. The completed order already contains everything needed; going outside its bounds is how one loses what was gained.
