Yilin Verse
天地配享,六位光明;陰陽順序,以成厥功。
Heaven and earth share the offering; the six positions blaze with light. Yin and yang in proper order; thereby the great work is accomplished.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Earth holds the mountain in modesty, and now heaven and earth are joined in sacrificial harmony. The six positions shine bright, yin and yang follow their proper sequence, and through this alignment all achievements are accomplished. The six positions refer to the six lines of a hexagram — each in its correct place, strong and yielding in balance. From Modesty to Great Possession, fire blazes above heaven: brilliance displayed for all to see. The verse describes the ideal cosmic order where modesty below enables radiance above. When yin and yang observe their proper stations, the result is not merely order but luminous abundance. Modesty's buried mountain provides the stable foundation upon which Great Possession's fire can blaze without burning out of control.
