Yilin Verse
住車醊酒,疾風暴起;泛亂福器,飛揚位草。明神降祿,道無害寇。
Halting the cart to pour a libation, a violent wind suddenly rises; scattering the sacred vessels, blowing offerings into the grass. Yet the bright spirits bestow fortune -- the road holds no harm from brigands.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder breaks from the earth as a roadside libation is disrupted by sudden gale winds. The ritual vessels are scattered, offerings blown into the grass. Yet the verse pivots: a luminous spirit descends with blessings, and the road ahead is free of bandits. The scene captures a sacrificial ceremony interrupted by violent weather — wine poured, wind rising, sacred implements overturned. Despite the chaos, divine favor prevails. From Enthusiasm to Great Taming, the transformation holds: heaven stored within the mountain accumulates virtue through adversity. The storm tests the ritual but cannot nullify its sincerity, and the accumulated merit of proper observance ultimately secures safe passage and divine protection.
