Yilin Verse
道禮和德,仁不相賊。君子往之,樂有其利。
The Way, ritual, harmony, and virtue; benevolence does not harm. The noble man goes forth in this; he delights in its rewards.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven stored within the mountain erupts as thunder from the earth — Enthusiasm. The way of ritual harmonizes with virtue; benevolence prevails and none do harm to one another. The gentleman proceeds toward this and finds joy and profit together. Great Taming's patient accumulation meets Enthusiasm's exuberant release: thunder bursting from the ground is stored energy finally finding expression. The verse presents the ideal outcome of long cultivation: when virtue, ritual, and benevolence have been thoroughly internalized, their expression brings spontaneous delight. From Great Taming to Enthusiasm, the mountain's stored heaven becomes thunder shaking the earth — the great release that comes when accumulated wisdom finally moves the world.
